How the automatic update of Office Maker Server works

The Office Maker software is automatically updated when triggered from an OM client workstation. To launch this update, you have to connect to the Office Maker Server application from a workstation equipped with an OM client and connect with the Administrator account, if possible outside working hours to avoid disturbing the employees working with Office Maker.

A disconnection time of 1 to 2 minutes can be defined in the update window from the OM Client workstation, as well as the e-mail address of the person who will be notified of the end of the update process and of the server availability.

Automatic update process:

  1. The OM Client application instructs the server to initiate the update.
  2. The Business/Finance/Staff Server application downloads the new version from our server.
  3. An alert is displayed on the workstations of users currently connected to OM Server, inviting them to quit the application quickly.
  4. At the end of the time limit, the user sessions still open are automatically closed.
  5. On Windows, the OM Server service is stopped. On Mac, the OM Server application is quit.
  6. Any preference files, backups, SSL certificates present in the initial program package are recovered and transferred to the update package.
  7. The old Office Maker Business/Finance/Staff Server application is renamed OM Business_old/OM Finance_old/OM Staff_old
  8. The new application is copied to the location of the old one and the old one is deleted.
  9. On Windows, the OM Server service is restarted. On Mac, the OM Server application is started.
  10. The user who started the update receives an e-mail confirming the availability of the server.
  11. Users can reconnect with their OM client, eventually an update will be proposed for OM Client (this may take 1 to 2 minutes depending on the transfer speed from the server).

Important information: the Office Maker Server application is located in an Office Maker folder. It is important to leave the application in this folder so that the automatic update works properly.

To bypass the execution rights on an application located in the C:Programs folder of the server (under Windows), the local users of the Office Maker folder have been given access with all the rights for this folder and therefore for the Office Maker Business, Finance or Staff applications that may be located in this folder. Same thing under macOS.

It is imperative to leave these full rights of this folder for local users, otherwise the automatic update could not be done in the future and especially the folder of the old application could not be renamed to OM xxxxxx_old and then deleted.

You could very well install this Office Maker folder and the applications in another folder on the server, or even in the root of a disk, but it is imperative to leave these rights as described above.

If an antivirus is installed on the server, you will have to add an exception for the Office Maker program(s) and if necessary authorize the download if a blocking rule is activated in the firewall for outgoing traffic or other download rules.

For the updates of the single-user versions on the users' workstations, exceptions should be added in the antivirus software in order to avoid any blocking during the update which is also done automatically for the single-user versions.

Should the automatic update fail, please read this article .
