How can I find out where my data file is located on disk?

The data you enter with your software is not stored in the software itself, but in a separate data file. This is the same principle as with software such as Microsoft Word or Excel: these programs are merely tools, and store your letters or tables of figures in documents saved on your disk. This is an important principle, enabling you to install software updates without endangering your data.

To manage your computer, it's vital to know the location of your data file(s). Without this information, you won't be able to make back-up copies, transfer your data if necessary, and so on.

To find the precise location of your data file on disk, proceed as follows:

  • Start the software, which automatically opens the data file (its location was saved the last time it was used).
  • Call the File>Open database command. The dialog shown opposite appears.
  • At the top left of the dialog, select the "Current file" item. On the right-hand side of the window, the name of the current file is displayed. Point the cursor at this name: a tooltip indicates the file's location.

The button with the eye icon at the bottom of the dialog displays the data file in the Finder (macOS) or File Explorer (Windows).

By default, when you create a data file, it is saved in the Documents\Office Maker\[Business|Finance|Staff] folder for Office Maker or Documents\BiblioMaker\ for BiblioMaker. It can, however, be placed elsewhere on the disk, or even on another disk.

Warning: if you change the location of your data file, the next time you start the software, it will no longer find the file in its last known location, and will display a dialog asking you to specify a new location for the file.
